The Evil Within is a survival horror video game wrapped in a haunting narrative, which takes place inside the mind of a psychopath. As the game progresses, the player uncovers deeper secrets and stories from the psychopath’s past.
Tango Gameworks and Bethesda Softworks approached Prologue to create a teaser trailer for The Evil Within that would premiere at E3, 2013. Apprising the point of view from which the story is told, the concept was to immerse the viewer in an illusory state, forcing them to question if what they are seeing is reality, or a grisly nightmare.
It was evident from the early conceptual stages that the teaser could be contrived from natural elements, with limited, to no use of CG. Committed to shoot on super 16mm film, with the parameters of not having any digital effects, we worked closely with the prolific character effects shop Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc, an Academy Award winning firm with over twenty-five years of experience in animatronics and prosthetic make-up. Shot at a rundown warehouse in downtown Los Angeles over the course of three days, through a collaborative effort with ADI, every creature and prop in the teaser was captured practically. The use of practical effects enabled a certain level of experimentation when shooting the gruesome opus, especially with scenes involving the man coated with shards of glass, and the subject forging barbwire with his bare hands. Synonymous with The Evil Within is Laura Creature, a recurring, disturbing, multi-limbed antagonist. To capture this iconic character on film, Prologue emptied out the bottom of the stage and filled it with blood. For hours, we shot an actor wearing prosthetics, rising out of the blood at various frame rates. The live action teaser provides an unvarnished look into the mind of a deranged psychopath, welcome to the world of The Evil Within.
