Brian De Palma / Universal Pictures
In 1993, while creative director at R/Greenberg Associates Los Angeles, Kyle Cooper and Michael Riley created the main title sequence for Brian De Palma’s 1993 crime-drama Carlito’s Way. The sequence begins with a black background displaying studio credits in simple, purple type. Credits continue to roll in the purple type over live-action of Al Pacino being shot, then being carried out on a gurney. The shot often blacks in and out while the camera makes a number of disorienting movements, in a way that correlates with what Pacino’s character is seeing. The sequence comes to an end with a close-up bird’s eye of Pacino on the stretcher as De Palma’s credit is displayed.
