Destiny’s Starmap sequence sets up the backs story of the game by utilizing stylized maps of the local solar system. These maps were custom made by Prologue and were modeled after medieval-era nautical maps. These styles of maps frequently had drawings accompanied in the margins to illustrate what sailors might find in particular sections of the map, such as a serpent for unknown waters. This is alluded to in the final seconds of the Starmap sequence when the “darkness” is animated as ominous tentacles extending from deep space. The Starmaps and their designs continue to be used throughout the entire game.
