Grammy Award-winning artists Hootie & The Blowfish recorded a re-make of David Gates’ 1978 hit single “Goodbye Girl” to accompany the TNT original film, The Goodbye Girl. The music video for “Goodbye Girl,” which features the band and clips from the film, was directed by Prologue and was used to promote the film on media channels and with a nationwide run in Regal Cinemas. The water motif becomes a visual device to establish the psychology of Paula, the bitter divorcee and main character in the movie. Rain pours down on the band as we hear the words of the chorus, “Goodbye doesn’t mean forever.” Treating the film footage with liquid effects recreates the lens through which Paula views the world— a veil of tears. It’s only in the end that she realizes her tears may be obscuring a brighter reality.
