When the PlayStation 3 was released in 2006, Resistance: Fall of Man became a staple for this next-generation system. Prologue shot and directed the live-action trailer for Resistance 3, released in 2011. Set four years after the events of Resistance 2, Resistance 3 takes place in a world where 90% of the human population has been wiped out by the Chimeran threat. The live-action trailer is a vehicle to introduce the post-apocalyptic setting and the everyday struggle for the remaining survivors. Our concept for the piece centers on the movement between three distinct sections: from idyllic scenes of the countryside, to gradually increasing hints of devastation, and finally to the climactic firefight. In order to film on an actual moving train, we shot at the Fillmore Railroad & Western Railway Co. in Fillmore, California. We shot on location for two days using four different weapons from the series, including two shotguns, a Carbine, a Marksman, and two Bullseye guns. The first day of filming captured footage on board the moving train as we traversed the deserted terrain. For the second day of shooting, we focused chiefly on the firefight at the end of the trailer. Prologue shot this scene in a stationary boxcar on the railway, enabling full control of the lighting. While the equipment and set for this scene were set up, we filmed the exteriors of the moving train from a chase vehicle. In post-production, the Chimera in the firefight and the enormous Chimeran machines were created and animated as CG models and digitally composited into our live-action scenes. This trailer provided fans a first look at Resistance 3, one of PlayStation’s highest rated exclusive series.
