Vincenzo Natali / Warner Bros. Pictures

LOGO

Prologue is often called upon to re-imagine the studio logos at the head of a film to symbolically represent its overall theme, or to suggest the tone of the film’s opening scenes, as is the case with the studio logos featured in Vincenzo Natali’s 2009 horror/sci-fi film Splice. We set out to instill a subtle sense of fear, and make reference to the film’s story of genetic manipulation in animals gone awry. Using a number of juxtaposed X-rays, including a frog, snake, and fish, we found formal similarities in the shape of the studio logos themselves and the squirming animals being X-rayed. The X-ray subjects twist and contort until they eventually become the studio logos.
