Tony Scott / TriStar Pictures
Kyle Cooper and Garson Yu created the main title sequence for Tony Scott’s The Fan, one of the first projects for Cooper’s first company, Imaginary Forces. Cooper and Yu combined black-and-white photos with video clips Cooper had of his father and uncle playing baseball as children. While using a formal white typeface for the credits, they assembled a montage to accompany the poignant poem read by Robert De Niro in voiceover. The goal of the sequence was to establishing De Niro’s character’s obsession with his favorite baseball player. Each shot is thus given a quick shutter effect, foreshadowing the photographs of the athlete taken from afar by an increasingly unhinged fan.
