BARRY SONNENFELD | WARNER BROS.
MAIN TITLE

In 1999 Kyle Cooper directed the main title sequence for Barry Sonnenfeld’s 1999 comedy Wild Wild West, starring Will Smith and Kevin Kline. The sequence was meant to pay homage to the original 1965 TV show’s animated opening, on which the film is based. The sequence contains an array of juxtaposed, color filtered images that feature the live action faces of the main characters. The 1965 grid evolves as white lines move about and come together to create a spider web formation, in reference to the emblem of the film’s main antagonist. The sequence’s credits are featured in a baby blue, saloon style typography, which get put on and wiped away by the shifting lines of the spider web’s threads.
